12 exam questions with model answers:
- 3 examples of the 10 mark "outline and explain two" questions, with answers
- 9 essay plans for the 20 mark questions, with answers
The nine essays
- Evaluate the view that the nuclear family is the most effective family type for socialising children and stabilising adult personalities (20)
- Evaluate the view that the main function of the family is to serve the needs of capitalism (20)
- Evaluate feminist views of family life and relationships (20)
- Evaluate sociological explanations for changes in patterns of marriage and cohabitation (20)
- Evaluate the view that relationships in Britain are characterised by symmetry (20)
- Evaluate the view that the family has become more child-centred (20)
- Evaluate the view that childhood is disappearing (20)
- Evaluate the view that government policies and laws have led to an increase in family diversity (20)
- Evaluate the reasons for changes in the birth rate and family size (20)
In the exam the 20 mark question comes with an item you must refer to. These plans assume the material in the item is somewhere in the essay already, so adding "as suggested in the item" at the relevant point is all that is needed.
Written by someone who marked the paper
Karl Thompson taught A-level sociology for eighteen years and spent twelve as an AQA examiner, marking all three papers on the current specification. The notes are written to what the mark schemes actually reward: AO1 for knowledge, AO2 for application and AO3 for evaluation, which is where most marks are lost.
For teachers
The At a Glance sheets work as revision lessons and cover work, and the model answers as marking practice. For class or department use, please get in touch first.
